Meta PC has been a company for over a year, but only recently decided to file for a trademark on the word. The company had filed the request on August 23, 2021, far before Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s rebranding meaning that the tech giant might not be able to hold a trademark on the new name of its company.

Neither company has been granted the trademark yet as filing for such things takes time, but Meta PC certainly has the leg up as it was first to file. According to TMZ, Meta PC founders Joe Darger and Zack Shutt told the publication that they’d be willing to cancel their trademark request if Facebook is willing to pay them $20 million.

While $20 million is certainly a steep asking price, Darger and Shutt explained that they’d be forced to rebrand their entire company if Facebook were to be given the trademark and rebranding would be costly, especially given the rising popularity of the PC company. So far, there hasn’t been a response from Zuckerberg or Facebook over Meta PC’s request, but a response should come soon as Facebook seems to be going all-out with its rebrand.

Even if Meta PC doesn’t get the $20 million it’s asking for, the company has seen a surge in popularity following Facebook’s announcement of its Meta brand. TMZ reports that the company has seen a 5,000% increase in followers to all of the company’s social media accounts including Twitter, Instagram, and, ironically enough, Facebook. Meta PC seems to be leaning into the absurdity of the situation by making jokes about it across its social media accounts.

TMZ also reports that an anonymous source “close to discussions” told the publication that despite Meta PC’s trademark on “Meta” as it refers to computers, laptops, tablets, and software, Facebook believes that it will still be able to hold a trademark on the word for the company’s intended uses. If that’s the case, then Meta PC might be needing to rebrand without its proposed $20 million after all.
